CNC Machinist II

Location: Stevensville, MT

We are seeking an experienced Machinist II to support advanced CNC machining operations within our precision manufacturing team. This role is responsible for independently setting up and proving out new machining programs, supporting process development activities, troubleshooting complex machining challenges, and mentoring developing machinists.


The Machinist II role plays a critical part in bringing new products into production by collaborating with programmers and Quality personnel to establish stable, repeatable, and efficient machining processes across a variety of advanced multi-axis CNC platforms.


This position is ideal for highly capable machinists who thrive in a technically challenging, innovation-focused manufacturing environment.


Responsibilities

  • Independently set up and run new CNC machining programs

  • Perform advanced setups on:

    • 3, 4, and 5-axis vertical mills

    • 5-axis horizontal mills

    • CNC lathes, including live-tooling and sub-spindle operations

  • Develop and document setup sheets, tooling lists, and machining process documentation

  • Produce and inspect first article components for new production programs

  • Collaborate with QC to validate dimensional conformance and process capability

  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T requirements

  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, fixture, and dimensional issues

  • Provide feedback to optimize machining processes and cycle times

  • Perform minor program edits at the machine

  • Capability to modify Fusion 360 toolpaths and support CAM-related improvements

  • Create simple machining programs from existing CAD models

  • Recommend tooling, workholding, and process improvements

  • Support continuous improvement and operational efficiency initiatives

  • Perform routine daily, weekly, and monthly machine maintenance including cleaning equipment, checking fluid levels, and supporting overall machine readiness and uptime.

  • Perform deburring, blasting, and other finishing and cleaning operations as needed.

  • Mentor and train Machine Operators and Machinist I personnel

  • Maintain a high standard of workmanship, organization, and process discipline

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • 5+ years of CNC machining experience preferred

  • Advanced experience with multi-axis CNC machining platforms

  • Strong setup and troubleshooting capabilities

  • Ability to independently prove out new machining programs

  • Strong understanding of GD&T and first article inspection processes

  • Experience working with tight-tolerance precision components

  • Experience using precision inspection equipment

  • Ability to collaborate effectively across Manufacturing, QC, and Engineering functions

  • Strong communication and documentation skills


Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Haas CNC controls

  • Experience using Fusion 360 CAM software

  • Experience machining aluminum and stainless steel components

  • Exposure to defense, aerospace, or high-precision manufacturing industries

  • Experience supporting new product introduction and process development activities

  • Familiarity with fixture development and tooling optimization


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally

  • Frequent use of hands and precision measuring tools

  • Exposure to machining coolant, metal chips, and industrial noise

  • Required use of eye and ear protection in designated manufacturing areas
